There was just the tiniest sound, the click of a spring in the door knob, and the operatives spun towards their worst nightmare: an all-black stealth commando, his rifle leveled, concealed face tilted over the barrel.

Faster than thought, they leapt to action. Variel was already crying out a warning and pulling out her weapon when she heard the apocalyptic crack of the sniper’s rifle – and time slowed. She saw the bullet, the insidious kill code, inching through the air towards the Oracle, who was frozen with the back of her hand raised to her mouth in a gasp. As her heart sank in anguish, Variel barely registered the horrifying awareness of the sniper's shot before she realized that Michael was already lunging in slow-motion, twisting his body into the path of the bullet.

In that terrible, eternal moment, she saw Michael stare down the kill code, his face steeled with unwavering resolution.

As time resumed, Michael’s eyes went wide as he took the lethal bullet in his side and staggered backwards, the Oracle reaching out as if to catch a priceless, falling vase.

“Michael!"

Do you think she really knew what was going to occur?

Good question. I asked her if she knew that Michael was going to get hurt, but she didn't answer.

I imagine that she foresaw what would happen - why else would she have insisted so strenuously that EPN protect her? On the other hand, perhaps she knew that (like Neo and Morpheus) either her or The Kid would get shot; who would actually be shot would be up to The Kid - a choice beyond which she may not have been able to see.

Hard to say for sure, I doubt we'll ever know.
