Fortis was having a really bad day. That morning, he had botched his role in a key surveillance operation, resulting in an embarrassing leak of sensitive data to the System. Watchman had been furious. As punishment, Watchman assigned Fortis to the lowliest Watcher assignment for the rest of the day – patrolling the rank, depressing upper levels of the gang’s Ole Miller Projects hideout. As humiliating as this was, Fortis suspected that there would be more serious retribution to come.
Reflecting on the miserable day he was enduring, Fortis leaned against a damp concrete block wall and felt deeply sorry for himself. Except for the hum of the ventilation system and the maddening buzz of the single, flickering fluorescent light bulb, the basement-like antechambers of the hideout were silent. As he was pouting, however, the silence was broken by an incongruently cheerful chime from the elevator that led to the surface.
Fortis rolled his eyes with profound annoyance, expecting to have to menace (or kill) whoever emerged from the elevator - a wayward homeless person or drunk high school students on a dare were the most likely candidates. When the doors squealed open to reveal an unlit and seemingly vacant elevator, however, Fortis inclined his head to the side and noiselessly drew his sidearm. “Who’s there?” he called. When there was no response, Fortis leveled his pistol at the dark, empty space and advanced across the cavernous room.
He squinted into the open elevator, trying to discern any movement within. As the dim light continued its irritating flicker, he reached the elevator entrance and peered into the inky shadows, sweeping his gun across the small space. “Is anyone in there . . . ?” Suddenly, as if in response, there was a bird-like explosion of movement from within the shadows. It was so terrifying and unthinkably swift that Fortis didn’t have time to squeeze off a shot before the gleaming knife zipped through the strobe-lit air and plunged deeply, fatally, into his thick neck. His eyes bugged as the gun dropped from his hands and he saw her emerge from the shadows: a young human woman with short raven-black hair, her expressionless, delicate features masked by glossy sunglasses. As the woman reached out her leather-clad arms to catch his collapsing body, he realized that his really bad day had just gotten a lot worse.
Moments later, Fortis stepped out of the elevator and looked down at himself. He lifted his hands to his fleshy cheeks, and he appeared to be momentarily covered in electronic static as his fingertips passed through his skin and seemed to adjust something underneath his face. Then, Fortis started walking purposefully through the elevator lobby towards the rest of the hideout, the lights flickering like heat lightning overhead . . .
((I’m farming in Stamos - and using disguises!! I’m level 34 so I have a decent chance of getting the top drop from the boss – Watcher's Shades: Concealment Detection (45pts); Stealth Detection (40%); Sneak Attack Detection (60%); Initiative Bonus (3%); Min Character Level at 32. The initiative bonus seems like a really nice boost to your interlock abs. Also, let me know if you need a Stinger, I’m the same level as the boss in the Hampton Green hotel, so I have a good shot at that top drop too.))
